I agree it would not hurt to post the md5sum for each file. It's time to quit functioning in panic mode. And they still pulled the file just to mollify the person who sent the email. I mention all this because every time I got the email from the hosting service right in the screen shot it was visible that the conclusion of the scan was that the "meter" was either neutral or in the green. I don't think it is any longer useful as a predictive tool. AV is becoming nothing but a scare tactic.Ībout all it is good for is cleaning known malware from systems. At some point it will reach the balance point where it will no longer be possible to scan a file without getting at least one suspicious report. If you think of it logically let us say a file is subjected to 200 AV scanners by one of these online services. Finally I posted on my page that I wrote all the utilities posted personally and regularly run an MD5 check to compare the zip files on my page with the local equivalents. Every time someone sent my web hosting service a VirusTotal report with even one red scan they would pull the file and send me an email. Since they both use Hotkeys I suspect that is the main reason they have the tendency to trip a few of these scanners. I have written a bunch of small utilities with AHK and also AutoIt3. To me that indicates the file is likely benign. If you take a look at the graphic is shows the arrow in the green. Nobody who posts a VirusTotal result seems to take note of the graphic in the top right corner if there are any scans that show red. Providing a file checksum (typically hosted on a separate server from the main file) helps the end user ensure that they have the original, unmodified file. It's not uncommon for a website's security to be compromised and legitimate files to be replaced with malicious, modified versions. Who is they? This site does not serve up malicious. Either that or they are somehow serving a malicious, modified installer. Lython wrote:I downloaded the latest installer from
